The Frontline Socialist Party says that the government is preparing to increase electricity tariffs.
The fuel subsidy that was being provided for electricity ended last month, and the party's Education Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda points out in a letter submitted to the Public Utilities Commission that there is a risk that the cost of thermal power generation will increase and electricity tariffs will increase.
At a time when inflation has increased to the 8% mark and the people are suffering, if electricity tariffs are increased, it will be seriously felt in the lives of the people, and therefore the Frontline Socialist Party requests that the Electricity Board not be allowed to increase electricity tariffs in the near future.
The Frontline Socialist Party points out that the coal imported for 2026 was of poor quality and that the expected electricity capacity could not be produced from it, and that problems in the tender process have hindered the procurement of coal stocks as scheduled.
The party points out that with the government's decision to discourage rooftop solar panels, it has become difficult to fill the gap with renewable energy, and under this situation, there will be an increased need for electricity generation from fuel, and that there is a risk of electricity bills rising again as the fuel subsidy provided for electricity generation ends this month
