The Cricket Transformation Committee has decided to reduce the number of clubs competing in the 'Tier A' category of the current inter-club tournament from 14 to 10 over the next two years, while maintaining the 12 clubs in the 'Tier B' category at their current level. This information is contained in a statement issued by the Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee regarding its progress to date.
The statement notes that the primary objective of reducing the number of Tier 'A' clubs is to bring the country's most talented players into the highest level of domestic competition, thereby creating a more competitive cricketing environment.
The committee believes that a more competitive cricket structure will help elevate the overall standard of domestic cricket and further strengthen the talent pipeline for national teams.
The Cricket Transformation Committee has also decided to transition the Tier 'A' league tournament from the current three-day format to a four-day format.
The committee believes that a four-day domestic tournament will be a significant step toward better preparing players for Test cricket, which is considered the pinnacle of the sport.
Furthermore, measures have been taken to formulate a clear and structured domestic cricket calendar that allows for adequate rest periods for players. This measure helps minimize the risk of injuries and exhaustion among players, while also providing sports clubs, coaches, and other stakeholders with sufficient time to plan their activities in advance.
