With the coming into force of the Electricity Act No. 36 of 2024, the Electricity Distribution Lanka (Private) Limited (EDL) has officially taken over the electricity distribution responsibilities previously handled by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). In a public statement issued to consumers and stakeholders, EDL stated that its entity has taken over the responsibility for the electricity distribution functions previously handled by CEB.

The new entity has been mandated to implement reforms and operational improvements intended to improve efficiency, reliability and overall quality of service in the electricity distribution sector.

The company further said that the changes are expected to ensure a more responsive and customer-centric electricity supply service for the public.
