Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered today (20) that the case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption against former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga accusing him of causing a loss of Rs. 4,750,828.72 to the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation be adjourned until January 26. This case alleges that during his tenure as the Minister of Tourism and Aviation, Prasanna Ranatunga granted an undue advantage to a private brokerage firm in the process of procuring medical insurance coverage from the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation for employees of four institutions under his ministry, including the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has informed the court that this action resulted in a massive financial loss to a state institution.
When the case was taken up today, the Magistrate issued the order for an adjournment after considering the submissions presented by the Bribery Commission.
