Recently, a unique case related to the mention of the father's nationality in the birth certificate was heard before the Court of Appeal. Lawyer Nuwan Bopage had filed this case against the Registrar General's refusal to record the father's nationality as "Sri Lankan" in his child's birth certificate.
When the case was called before the Court of Appeal last Friday (10), the Registrar General agreed to enter the father's nationality as "Sri Lankan" on the birth certificate. Accordingly, the court closed the hearing of the petition.
Bopage filed this writ application after the Registrar General refused to register his son's birth certificate due to the mandatory requirement to mention the father's race in the birth registration process. The petitioner requested the Registrar General to enter the father's race as "Human" or "Sri Lankan". Failing that, he had asked to leave it blank.
