It is reported that approximately ten people, including several school students, have been hospitalized following a horrific traffic accident on the Southern Expressway between Galanigama and Dodangoda. The accident occurred when a bus transporting schoolchildren collided with a cab, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving several other vehicles approaching from behind. Reports indicate that two buses were among the vehicles involved, one of which was en route to Matara. Police state that six cars were also involved in the crash.
Following the accident, police diverted vehicles traveling from Galle to Colombo off the expressway at the Dodangoda exit.
As a result of the accident, heavy traffic congestion has developed on the Southern Expressway between Galanigama and Dodangoda.
