Renewable energy is no longer a vision for the future; it is a global priority. As countries accelerate the transition to cleaner power, large-scale renewable energy infrastructure is becoming essential to meeting rising electricity demand while reducing carbon emissions. New Zealand, which already generates much of its electricity from renewable sources, continues investing in projects that support its long-term sustainability goals and strengthen the national grid.

Among these landmark developments is the Te Rāhui Solar Farm near Taupō, currently, New Zealand's largest utility-scale solar projects. Spanning more than 1,000 hectares, it will feature around 360,000 solar panels and is expected to make a significant contribution to the country's renewable energy capacity when completed in phases from 2027.
For Sri Lankan engineer Jayan Shirantha Mendis, who is based in New Zealand, being entrusted with a key project delivery leadership role on a development of this scale marks a significant professional milestone and reflects the expertise Sri Lankan engineers bring to world-class renewable energy initiatives.
Jayan spoke with us about the project, its significance to New Zealand's renewable energy ambitions.
Q: You're involved in one of New Zealand's largest renewable energy projects. Can you describe the scope of this initiative and how it fits into the country's sustainability goals?
A: Te Rāhui is currently, the largest solar energy development project in New Zealand. Located near Taupō, it covers more than 1,000 hectares and will generate clean electricity for the national grid, with construction delivered in phases from 2027. Its importance extends beyond New Zealand. By 2050, more than 80% of global electricity generation is expected to come from renewable sources, led by solar and wind, alongside greater electrification, improved energy efficiency and sustainable fuels.
Q: As Project Manager, what does your role involve, and how has your previous experience prepared you for a project of this magnitude?
A: Before joining Te Rāhui, I worked on the Dannevirke Solar Farm, which opened the door to this opportunity. I was initially invited to join earlier this year but had already committed to my previous project. After completing it, I was approached again and joined in May. While the engineering principles remain the same, the scale, complexity and coordination required here are on another level. I gained experience leading engineering teams in Sri Lanka, the Middle East and across major projects in New Zealand, and these projects have prepared me well for these challenges. I'm also grateful for the educational opportunities I've had, earning engineering qualifications in both Sri Lanka and the UK.
Q: Large-scale renewable energy projects often come with significant challenges. What has stood out most during this project?
A: The technical work is demanding, but what stands out most is the strong emphasis on safety, quality and employee wellbeing. Standards go well beyond compliance. Regular health and safety assessments, routine alcohol testing, strict quality assurance and comprehensive worksite protocols are part of everyday operations. Working hours also account for travel time to prevent fatigue. At peak delivery, more than 500 people are involved across engineering and construction, making disciplined planning and teamwork essential.
Q: As a Sri Lankan engineer working on a project of this scale, what has this journey meant to you personally?
A: It has been a tremendous privilege. Everything I learned while working with leading engineering organisations in Sri Lanka gave me the foundation to pursue opportunities like this in New Zealand. Above all, I am deeply grateful to God for giving me the strength, wisdom and opportunities throughout this journey. My faith has kept me grounded through every challenge, and I am equally thankful to my family for their constant encouragement and support. Looking back, every step prepared me for this moment, and I feel honoured to represent the capabilities of Sri Lankan engineering on an international platform.
Q: What lessons do you believe Sri Lanka can take from projects like Te Rāhui?
A: Sri Lanka has enormous renewable energy potential, and projects like this demonstrate what is possible through long-term planning, investment and strong engineering standards. The experience I've gained here would be valuable for future developments back home. Beyond technology, there is much to learn about project governance, quality systems, workforce management and safety culture. I hope sharing these experiences can contribute, even in a small way, to Sri Lanka's renewable energy journey.
Q: What advice would you give to young Sri Lankan engineers aspiring to build international careers in renewable energy?
A: Develop a mindset that goes beyond local benchmarks. Build your technical knowledge, stay curious, embrace innovation and always strive to meet global standards. Throughout my career, I've enjoyed mentoring younger engineers because our profession grows when we help others succeed.
