There is an increase in intestinal diseases among young people, says Gastroenterologist and Liver Specialist Dr. Supun Kulatunga.
Speaking at a media briefing held at the Health Promotion Bureau, Specialist Dr. Supun Kulatunga said that the main reason for this is the excessive interest in artificial foods among the youth. He said this in more detail.
"There is a complex relationship between our gut and brain. We call it the gut-brain axis. That means if we are very stressed, if we have a lot of stress, or if we have anxiety, our gut automatically feels it. This complex process, the food we eat, and a combination of these things can cause IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). This condition is becoming more common now. Our lifestyles have changed. Our eating habits have changed. Many young people are turning to artificial foods instead of natural foods like vegetables, fruits, greens, and grains. Because it is easier. That is why they can now see more Irritable Bowel Syndrome."
