The Criminal Investigation Department has reported to the court that in addition to the 11 youths who were abducted, detained and murdered at the Navy’s ‘Gunsite’ camp in Trincomalee, six other women were also detained and five of them were later murdered. It is also reported that one of the women killed was pregnant.

The department has been able to uncover the chain of events related to these women during investigations conducted in connection with the kidnapping and disappearance of 11 youths from Colombo and its suburbs for the purpose of extorting money during 2008 and 2009.

The cases filed in the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court (B2020/2011, B2863/2008, B2513/2008) regarding the disappearance of these women had been closed due to lack of information.

However, after the CID informed the court that 5 of the women who were reported missing had been murdered, the Magistrate has ordered the IGP to transfer further investigations into the incident to the CID’s Group Robbery Investigation Division.

According to a statement given by former Navy Commander Travis Sinniya, even he was prevented from entering the ‘gunsite’ area at the Trincomalee camp, and the responsibility for it was held by D.K.P. Dassanayake, who was Wasantha Karannagoda’s personal assistant.

Further investigations are ongoing and it is reported that more Navy officers involved in the incident are scheduled to be arrested in the future.
