In the face of the rapid increase in fuel prices in the world market, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation has once again turned its attention to investigating whether Nigerian crude oil can be refined at the Sapugaskanda refinery as an alternative.
Earlier, the corporation had imported and tested a crude oil sample from Nigeria, and it was revealed that the oil sample had been mixed with water. Accordingly, a new oil sample was requested, said the corporation's chairman, D.J. Rajakaruna said.
Pointing out that the rising fuel prices in the world market are a major challenge for Sri Lanka, he said that he is constantly looking into alternatives that can provide fuel at a lower cost.
The main test is to see whether Nigerian crude oil can be successfully refined at the Sapugaskanda refinery. The Sapugaskanda oil refinery supplies between 25% and 30% of the local fuel market requirements
