The International Monetary Fund will not be an obstacle to Sri Lankans living abroad returning to the country as financial aid, Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe said.

Participating in a discussion with Derana TV channel, he pointed out that there is no obstacle for anyone who wants to donate money to Sri Lanka, but that person or institution should be able to explain how the money was earned.

The International Monetary Fund will not interfere in this process at all, but he said that such donations should be made subject to the rules on money laundering.

The Central Bank Governor said that if such a large amount of money cannot be explained in detail, foreign banks will not accept the money and the local banking system will also refuse to receive such money as it is not legal.

Singer Sangeeth Wijesuriya, who recently appeared on a Rupavahini program, said that the friends of the National People's Power Movement abroad were preparing to donate 23 million dollars to Sri Lanka, but the International Monetary Fund did not allow it.
