Another court ruling that Deshabandhu's fundamental rights were violated.

The Supreme Court today ruled that the arrest and detention of social media activist Anuruddha Bandara for strongly criticizing the then government during the 2022 public protests violated his fundamental rights.

The Supreme Court ruling states that former Senior DIG Deshabandhu Thennakoon and the then OIC of Modara Police, Inspector Nalin Sriyantha, violated the petitioner's fundamental rights.

In April 2022, the complainant Anuruddha Bandara was taken away by a group dressed in civilian clothes for expressing his views on social media against the then economic and political crisis. This was widely speculated to be an attempt to abduct and disappear as he did not inform his family or lawyers about his whereabouts.

He was arrested under Section 120 of the Penal Code for conspiring against the government and publishing news on social media that was likely to cause public unrest, the police later stated.
