A senior government official stated that the suspension of the circular sent to the Western Province prohibiting school teachers from conducting tuition classes for children studying in their classes was implemented without the intervention of the Minister of Education, Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

The government itself has accused the teachers who conduct private classes of having the support of the current government to form it, and the conclusion that this is due to the fact that offending them could affect the upcoming elections is the reason for this.

When asked about this issue, Ceylon Teachers’ Union Secretary Joseph Stalin stated as follows.

“This circular is not new. It is already being implemented in the Central, North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces. Teachers who harassed students because the children they teach did not attend tuition classes have been punished.

The tuition mafia is a threat to education in our country. The tuition mafia is behind the postponement of the Advanced Level exams. They have instilled in the minds of parents the fear that they cannot pass the exams without tuition. Therefore, the government should take a common decision

Asoka Chandrasekara, executive director of the Lanka Teachers’ Union, states that all tuition classes across the country should be regulated.

He also said that a good teacher would never bring students who learn from him in school to his tuition class.
